Here are some basic GE merchanting rules which I made. If you will use these rules, then you will get very far in the skill of GE merchanting. 
1. Almost all items change in price everyday. If the price fell today, buy it around minimum price and sell it medium price. If the price rose today, buy it medium price and sell it around maximum price.
2. It would be wise to buy a little above minimum and medium price, and to sell something under medium and maximum price. Buying and selling will go faster this way.
3. The more an item has changed in price, the better it is to merchant with.
4. Remember that there are limits in the Grand Exchange, for example the 4 hour buying and selling rule, or the limit in quantity every 4 hours. So have patience!
5. You need money to make money, so the more money you have, the more profit you will make.
6. P2P GE merchanting is better then F2P GE merchanting, since there are more items to merchant with, there are more slots, and the limits in quantity every 4 hours are on some items higher then on F2P.
7. Rising items are mostly better then falling items, because the value of the rising items is increasing each day, while the value of the falling items is decreasing each day. So you will have more profit when you will merchant rising items.
8. Look out that you aren't buying crashing items which are being sold or dumped at minimum price and which you can't sell for medium price, or even sell back at minimum price. For example: Party Hats.
9. How do you know if an item is going to fall? If the rising price is decreasing each day, then the item is going to fall soon. How do you know if an item is going to rise? If the falling price is increasing each day, then the item is going to rise soon.
